Heritage of the First World War

Details

Location: Dolina Soče

The lethal weaponry of World War One, which led to one of the biggest bloodbaths in recent history precisely here in the Isonzo Valley, left many traces in the mountain paradise. One can still chance upon steel bits of grenades, worn memory plates, rusty gun-carriages, concrete forts, grotesque tunnels and caverns, numerous graveyards with militarily arranged crosses…and endless paths and roads that no longer lead anywhere, except to the realisation of the great senselessness of war, which the author Ernest Hemingway, himself a soldier wounded at the Isonzo Front, rejected with a master syntagm: A farewell to arms.

»Ultra cineres hostium ira non super est« - the enemy's wrath does not reach beyond the ashes of the dead – says the inscription on the memorial military church at Javorca in the valley of the Tolminka river. The best healer, time, has healed the wounds. With its numerous collections, commemoration events, publications, testimonials as well as restorations of paths and monuments, the Kobarid Museum is an attempt of the locals to remember and warn of the Isonzo Front, one of the greatest mountain military campaigns in the world.
